What Is the Point of School?

Purpose of School

Learning can happen anywhere, so why do we need a particular environment like school? The following are some reasons:

• Preparing Students for Life
  School’s primary goal is to prepare students for life by equipping them with necessary skills for a career and encouraging their individuality. On one hand, school teaches the skills needed to become productive members of society; on the other, the teachers who make the most lasting impact are those who support and celebrate each student’s unique qualities.
• Balancing Social Bonds and Individuality
  Humans are social beings who thrive through cooperation, yet each individual has personal goals, dreams, and distinct ideas. This creates a tension between social connection and personal identity. For young people, especially middle and high schoolers, this tension is a daily challenge as they shift between asserting their uniqueness and seeking peer acceptance.
• Historical Examples of Cultural Tension
  Cultures have long existed within this balance between unity and individuality. In feudal Great Britain, clans initially united for protection, with leaders emerging based on strength and leadership skills. Over time, the balance of power required checks, such as the Magna Carta, to protect individual rights against growing authority.

  In a more modern example, the recent U.S. economic crisis highlighted the tension between personal gain and social responsibility, as unregulated profit-seeking in the banking industry led to financial instability, prompting government intervention for public protection.

• The Role of Teachers in Both Social and Individual Growth
  Teachers play a key role in nurturing both community awareness and individual thought. By teaching content, they give students the knowledge necessary to contribute to society, but by encouraging independent thinking, they allow society to evolve.
• Reading and Writing
  Literacy is central to balancing social and individual growth. Reading, a receptive skill, allows students to absorb knowledge from the past, connecting them to society’s collective knowledge. Writing, a more active skill, enables students to engage with this information, make it their own, and express unique ideas. Reading is generally easier to teach and assess as it focuses on shared learning. Writing, however, demands more attention to individual expression and creativity.
• Approaching Writing as Individual Expression
  A common risk in teaching literacy is treating writing too much like reading by focusing on technical aspects, such as grammar and structure, at the start. Instead, writing should begin with personal ideas (“What do you want to say?”), followed by clarity (“How can you best say it?”), and finally, mechanics (“How should it be polished?”). This approach puts the individual voice first, with responsibility to readers following.
• Balancing Culture and Individuality
  In essence, the school exists to provide a shared cultural foundation while fostering individualism. With the help of these two aims, we allow society to continue progressing as each generation contributes its unique voice to a common culture.
